The Hospital of Central Connecticut is an acute-care community
teaching hospital providing comprehensive inpatient and outpatient
services in general medicine and surgery, as well as a wide variety
of specialties. Staffed by our talented team of leading

In collaboration with the Care Logistics Center (CLC) and Central
Region leadership, the Director of Throughput and Resource
Optimization is responsible for maintaining operational flow
between all admission sources and inpatient services, and is
accountable for developing and maintaining systems that maximize
patient access and throughput, in an effort to optimize clinical
and financial outcomes. Responsibilities include but, are not
limited to the following:

- Coordinates patient throughput from all points of entry to
facilitate overall hospital patient flow by collaborating with the
medical staff and other members of the interdisciplinary team, and
CLC, in the coordination, organization, and planning of patient
movement across the hospital.
- Participates in defining and developing strategic and
operational objectives to improve patient flow in support of HHC
strategic initiatives and mission. Acts as a change agent and
manages organizational change efforts to ensure operational
effectiveness
- Collaborates with hospital staff, case coordination,
physicians, front line staff and external partners to define,
reduce, and eliminate any barriers to patient throughput. Works in
partnership with all cross-continuum areas to optimize transitions
of care throughout the HHC enterprise and external community.
Facilitates Central Region daily bed huddles and is the point
person for Central Region, partnering with the Care Logistics
Center.
- Provides communication, direction, and guidance to healthcare
providers in the achievement of optimal patient flow throughout the
hospital. Develops and implements policies, procedures, guidelines,
initiatives and tools related to throughput.
- Develops, maintains, and improves systems for monitoring and
managing patient flow to maximize patient access and minimize
delays. Monitors bed capacity, staffing beds and the demand for
beds daily and communicates an action plan for patient movement.
Monitors OR and Procedural schedules every day and partners with
CLC and rest of organization to facilitate most appropriate
placement for all patients.
- Responsible for the administrative oversight of patient flow
and staffing resource allocation throughout the inpatient areas;
ensures effective utilization of staff resources to meet
established goals and objectives. Actively rounds on clinical units
to assess patient flow issues and identify barriers to timely
transitions and works to resolve.
- Collects and analyzes data related to patient flow, reports
findings, and develops action plans in accordance with best
practice for patient flow. -
- Is the point of escalation for throughput barriers, including
procedure and testing delays impacting clinical progression and
patient flow. Provides leadership in surge planning for hospital
and supports surge planning across the hospital system.
- Develops and manages the operational budget for area of
responsibility; identifies resources required to achieve agreed
upon goals and advocates for them during resource allocation.
Accountable for operating priorities while maintaining fiscal
responsibility.
- Actively supports, promotes, and role models customer service
standards and ensures that patient, family and customer experience
expectations are met or exceeded.
- Promotes positive service relationships with patients and
families, physicians, and staff throughout HH, as well as across
the health care community to ensure exceptional patient experience
through patient centered initiatives and high levels of customer
service. Qualifications Experience:
- A minimum of (10) years of increasingly responsible healthcare
leadership experience required with a proven track record in
patient flow initiatives.
- Organizational leadership required. Education:
- Current licensure to practice as Physician Assistant or
Advanced Practical Nurse in the State of CT. -Knowledge, Skills and
Ability Requirements -
- Established reputation as a leader, consultant, and expert
spokesperson for patient flow and throughput
- Excellent Communication skills to lead, coach and mentor others
and manage change efforts related to patient flow
- High level of analytical ability and exceptional ability to
problem solve is required
- Emergency Department, Inpatient and/or ICU experience is
required.
- Ability to navigate complex systems
- Strong presentation skills
- Ability to lead through influence
- Ability to work in a highly matrixed environment
