QUALIFICATIONSRequired: Graduate of an accredited school of respiratory care.Required: Registered Respiratory Therapist or in lieu of Registration - Minimum of a ten years working with patients with chronic respiratory diseases.Required: Licensed by the State of Connecticut.Required (minimum credentials): Registered or Certified by the National Board for Respiratory Care.Preferred: CPR Certification (CPR certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire).JOB SUMMARY An Outpatient Respiratory Therapist functions within the healthcare team as a professional caregiver who provides quality care to patients and their families and caregivers. The therapist uses essential knowledge and skill in the application of respiratory care in the areas of clinical data, equipment and therapeutic procedures. The Outpatient Respiratory Therapist will work under the guidance of the Respiratory Disease Manager to carry out assigned duties.PHYSICAL DEMANDS Job requires sitting infrequently, standing and walking for long periods, up to one hundred fifty minutes at a time. Reaching, twisting, turning, and bending are frequently required. Lifting of weights greater than thirty five pounds and pushing of objects greater than one hundred pounds is occasionally required.COGNITIVE DEMANDS Job requires independent problem identification, abstract reasoning and adaptability to foreign environments and information and quick decision making is required. A high degree of selective attention discernment, perception, and/or concentration is necessary.Job requires legibility, speaking accuracy and logical sentence and paragraph organization. A working knowledge and familiarity with clinical terminology and definitions is required.Job requires a high level of communication skills including expression of abstract/complex ideas, use of negotiation and active listening, and the ability to dialogue with multiple parties.Job requires an ability to comprehend abstractions and to make inferences. A working knowledge and familiarity with clinical terminology and definitions is required.Job requires familiarity with algebraic expressions such as real numbers, linear quadratic, rational, exponential, logarithmic, angle and circular functions, and universe functions; related algebraic solutions of equations and inequalistics; limits and continuity, and probability and statistical inference. Geometry, deductive axiomatic geometry, plane and solid and rectangles coordinates. Shape math-practical application of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion, mensuration, logarithms, slide rule, practical algebra, geometric construction, and essentials of trigonometry.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSProvides Respiratory therapy to Outpatients upon doctors' orders. Demonstrates skills and judgment necessary to implement therapy. Assist in the development and coordination of Individualized Treatment Plans with physician, team patient and family for goals of therapy. Performs assessment, data collection and screenings and investigate patient issues to secure the necessary information to ensure positive, safe patient outcomes.Documents all delivered care and appropriate charges for completed therapy in the patient record in a timely, accurate and thorough manner.Communicates with patients, family and team members to assure understanding of therapies as they relate to the goals of care. Answers questions relevant to prescribed therapy. Assess pre and post program outcomes and communicates to all members of the patient's care team and family. Communicates with Respiratory Disease Manager for issues and concerns of care.Assists with outcome measures and assesses program in order to sustain program integrity and improve patient outcomes. Collects data and assists in reviewing program outcomes. Makes suggestions for improvements based on fiscal, quality and regulatory goals and requirements.Remains knowledgeable in current Respiratory Care practices in order to keep pace with best practice. Attends educational opportunities to support ongoing learning. Precepts visiting students to the outpatient pulmonary programs. Represents the outpatient programs to all stakeholders in a positive manner, keeping the mission and values of the institution in mind.
