The Academic Counselor, as the chief facilitator of student progress in a distance learning environment, manages a caseload of students using independent judgment based on adult development and learning theory and knowledge of a wide range of learning opportunities, including an understanding of current trends in specific academic subjects.

College Professionals and Faculty are expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills along with strong Information technology literacy skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.)


A Master's degree in an appropriately related field with three (3) three years of relevant experience in higher education; or a combination of education, training, and experience which would lead to the competencies required for successful performance of the positions essential duties.

Successful Candidate must have or must possess:

  • Experience with adult students and distance learning.
  • Analyzing, synthesizing, and interpreting academic data.
  • Adult development and learning theory.

  • Experience providing academic counseling to low-income, first-generation, and academically disadvantaged college students.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including sensitivity to the needs of students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong computer/technology skills.


Under the direction of the Director of Academic Services, the Academic Counselor is accountable for providing services that facilitate student progress in a distance learning environment by effective performance in these essential areas:

  • Managing a caseload of students using independent judgment and problem-solving skills including.
  • Developing drafts of plans of study for students.
  • Communicates with students using a variety of modalities.
  • Supports retention and academic success by fostering appropriate interpersonal relationships with students.
  • Collaborates with faculty and acts as a student advocate in developing and refining academic programs and policies.
  • Coordinates special projects.
  • Maintains the standards of confidentiality as established by the counseling profession.
  • Develops informational resources for students, including worksheets and handbooks.
  • Maintains current knowledge of professional issues.

In addition to the accountabilities listed above, the incumbent is required to carry out the essential duties of Attendance and participation at convocation and commencement ceremonies; Service on assigned committees and task forces; Attendance and participation at committee, staff, informational and professional meetings.  These may involve attendance at evening or weekend events.
